Shtick! is a five-episode webinar series which investigates the connection of modern comedy, satire and religion through some of its most famous appearances in pop culture. This series will be hosted by Dr Esther-Miriam Wagner and chaired by Alissa Symon.

Episode 4: Jewish: Canada - "YidLife Crisis"

Speaker: Miriam Borden

Synopsis: YidLife Crisis is an online series which has been coined 'the first Yiddish Sitcom'. In this episode, the speaker will explore the humoristic themes presented throughout the series and explain why the creators, who are based in Montreal, chose to create the series in Yiddish.

Miriam Borden is currently a PhD student at the University of Toronto. She holds a BA in Jewish Studies (Hons., 2014) and an MA in Yiddish (2018) from the University of Toronto. Her research interests are in the development and evolution of Yiddish as an ethnolinguistic identity of the organised institutional Jewish life in the Jewish community of Toronto in the postwar period.
