Ian, Lord Blair of Boughton is Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Woolf Institute. He read English Literature at Christ Church, Oxford, and is now one of Christ Church's Honorary Students. He has been a faculty member both of the Centre for Criminology at Oxford and the Institute of Criminology at Cambridge. He has held visiting fellowships or professorships at New York University, at John Jay College, New York and at Nuffield College, Oxford.

He was a police officer for 35 years and served as Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police in London ('Scotland Yard') from 2005 to 2008. He led the Met through the London bombings of 2005. One of his particular interests during this period was the relationship between the police and faith communities.

He is also a trustee of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and of the Michael Sieff Foundation, as well as being patron of a number of small charities. He writes, lectures and broadcasts in the UK, the US, the Middle East and India.

His latest book, Policing Controversy, was published in 2009.

He was ennobled in 2010 and sits as a Crossbench Peer.
