John Lyon CB
Director, Strategy and Implementation
John Lyon CB joined the Woolf Institute in April 2015 as Director of Strategy and Implementation and Company Secretary. He is responsible for financial and business planning and for preparing the Institute for its move to its new purpose built building in the grounds of the Westminster College campus in the summer of 2017.
John read history at Selwyn College before joining the civil service. He worked in a number of central government departments, finally serving on the executive management Boards of the Home Office and then what became the Ministry of Justice. He was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath for services to policing. On leaving the civil service, he was appointed in 2008 by the House of Commons to be its Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, serving a five year term.
John is a lay member of barristers' disciplinary panels established by the Bar Tribunals and Adjudication Service. He is a trustee of the Somerset Community Foundation and an elected member of the Council of the National Trust: he chairs its Nominations Committee for appointments to the Board of Trustees. He is a volunteer at his local National Trust property. In 2016, he was appointed senior member of St Edmund's College.
