Job Vacancy: Academic Director, Centre for the Study of Jewish-Christian Relations, Woolf Institute, Cambridge
The Woolf Institute specialises in the study of relations between Jews, Christians, and Muslims. It is a global leader in addressing one of the most pressing and rewarding challenges of our time: the current and historical relationships that exist between the faith-traditions of Judaism, Islam and Christianity, with special reference to Europe and the Middle East.
Applications are invited for the position of Academic Director of the Centre for the Study of Jewish-Christian Relations.
The successful candidate must demonstrate evidence of excellence in and commitment to the supervision of doctoral-level students and be able to teach within the Cambridge Theological Federation. Experience of Professional Doctorates would be an advantage. The candidate will also be expected to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as direct and teach on the Institute’s e-learning course, Jews, Christians, and Muslims in Europe: Modern Challenges.
As the Director of the Centre, the successful candidate will be responsible for raising its academic and public profile and maintaining a reputation for balance and rigorous scholarship. The candidate must be able to demonstrate a commitment to research-led initiatives leading to publication, and to secure funding.
The candidate must be able to work collegially within a small team and work jointly with the Centre for the Study of Muslim-Jewish Relations Academic Director on various initiatives in building the academic reputation of the Woolf Institute. They will also represent the Centre for the media and in other public venues, direct the activities of the Centre, including running conferences and seminars, and manage the Centre budget.
The appointment will commence in the summer 2013, the exact date to be negotiated with the candidate.
The candidate must have a PhD and preferably postdoctoral experience. The successful candidate will be expected to know at least one European language besides English. The field of interest and academic specialisation are open but the candidate must demonstrate expertise in some aspect of Jewish-Christian relations. We would welcome candidates engaged in one or more of the following areas of research: biblical, medieval, or modern history; religion in contemporary Europe; church history; Jewish history; and the comparative study of law, culture, and religion. Practical experience in dialogue, reconciliation, and co-operation would also be welcomed.
