Oasis of Peace Lecture 2012

17 July 2012

Dr Ed Kessler and SDB

On the 11th July Dr Edward Kessler gave the annual Oasis of Peace lecture in central London, attended by 50 people. Oasis of Peace (Neve Shalom/Wahat al-Salam) is a cooperative village of Jews and Palestinian Arabs of Israeli citizenship, founded in 1972 on a barren hilltop between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv by Bruno Hussar, a Dominican friar, with the aim of peaceful reconciliation between Jews, Muslims and Christians.

Husar, an Egyptian Jew who converted to Catholicism, dedicated his life to encouraging peaceful coexistence between Jews and Arabs. The community's name is drawn from Isaiah 32:18, 'my people shall dwell in an oasis of peace'. The village is situated equidistant from Jerusalem and Tel Aviv-Jaffa.  The lecture was entitled 'Transformative minorities: 'Jews, Christians and Muslims'.
