Rachel Shabi is an Iraqi-Jewish journalist. She has written widely on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Middle East for a variety of media, including The Guardian, Sunday Times, Independent, English Aljazeera, Jane’s Intelligence Digest, Foreign Policy, the New Statesman and the National (UAE). Her book, Not the Enemy - Israel's Jews from Arab Lands, was published in 2009 and received a National Jewish Book award. She was shortlisted for the 2011 Orwell Prize for political journalism, won the Anna Lindh journalism prize 2011 and was also nominated for the Next Century Foundation’s cutting edge media award.
This talk examines the popular misconception that the terms "Jew" and "Arab" are mutually exclusive, examining the identity and experience of of Mizrachi Jews and their history in Israel.
